Jobs to Do in the Garden this Month

Happy New Year! - Let's make 2020 a great year for the Garden

  • Make sure you recycle your old Christmas tree - there are temporary recycling sites all over the Guildford area (until 17th January)

  • Be kind to Christmas houseplants - Don't overwater Poinsettias and keep Amaryllis in a warm, but not hot room

  • Tidy borders clearing old herbaceous stems and dead foliage and lightly forking over the soil

  • Begin pruning apple trees and pear trees but leave stone fruits (plums, cherries and apricots) unpruned until the summer as pruning these fruit trees now will make them susceptible to silver leaf infections

  • Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season

  • Finish your seed orders for 2020

  • Remember to use a greenhouse heater or use fleece to protect overwintering tender plants
