The Potting Shed
December 2020
As we reach the end of 2020, we can start to look forward to the new Programme of Events for 2021. There may still be the need for some changes to this schedule as we adapt to the ability to do Zoom or on-site meetings, but there is still much to look forward to in the year ahead.

Jobs to Do in the Garden this Month
In these exceptional times, keep safe and keep gardening
Frostly weather will be here so check insulation and heating in the greenhouse
Generally stop watering in the greenhouse and reduce watering for houseplants
Finish tidying the top stems of faded perennials where appropriate
The winter months are the perfect time for pruning and maintenance of many deciduous trees and shrubs – the main exceptions being evergreens or tender shrubs, and cherries, plums and other stone fruit
Tie in wall trained shrubs and climbers to prevent wind damage
Harvest and enjoy the root crops and brassicas from the vegetable garden. Spring-sown Brussels Sprouts should be ready for harvest now
Continue to remove fallen leaves from lawns but avoid walking on frost-covered grass to prevent damage and the appearance of brown patches
Remember to take some time to enjoy your garden and the beautiful countryside around you. The loss of leaves from trees and shrubs have revealed their beautiful silhouettes and the richness of colours in their stems and barks.
