Working

Jobs to Do in the Garden this Month

As long as the rain stops...

  • Finish planting any bare root roses in a sunny position

  • Prepare ground for hardy annuals

  • Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials (bring any spares to the Club Plant Stall!)

  • Mulch herbaceous perennials with well-rotted manure or garden compost

  • Start chitting early potatoes - stand them on end 'eyes-up' in a tray or egg box and place them in a bright, cool, frost-free place

  • Continue sowing seeds in a propagator or warm, light window sill

  • Start Dahlia tubers into growth in a frost-free place

  • Mow your lawn if it needs it - choose a dry day and set your blades higher than usual

  • Cut Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) back to 30-60 cm from the base for the best winter stems next year

  • Prune bush and climbing roses
